Stress can trigger the stress response, or the fight-or-flight response, in which the central nervous system (CNS) increases hormonal activity that supports the ability to move or fight; blood flow to the limbs increases and is diverted from the core, digestion slows, breathing and heart rate increase. Massages have been found to be effective for treating ADHD. In a recent study, ADHD adolescents who took ten massage treatment classes for two weeks rated themselves as more content. Researchers found that the individuals with ADHD were less squirmy, and teachers noticed more on-task behavior.
There is a great deal of fear and controversy that is associated with discussing sex and massage therapy. It is critical that as massage therapists, we maintain a professional boundary around this issue. Most therapists typically limit their discussions to the general health benefits of massage therapy, avoiding any discussion of massage’s benefits to sexual health. Nevertheless, while we never want to encourage, or allow for, any type of sexual misconduct with our clients, it is time to put aside the stereotypes and negative associations and acknowledge that massage therapy contributes positively to sexual health and function in both men and women.
Any of your emotions, like anger, can contribute to or aggravate muscle tension and pain. You feel extra tension, more knots, and have physical signs that there are unexpressed emotions. Anger is a stress response and any reduction in tension can help lower the physiological component of the anger and make you feel less angry. Massage gives you much needed time for your brain to deal with emotions and release negative energy. While you’re on the massage table, you’re in a safe space that helps you peel away the stresses of the day and deal with things at a subconscious level. Often clients with very pent up emotions will laugh, cry, sigh audibly, have twitchy muscles or fall asleep as an expression of emotional release. Your massage therapist will help you manage those emotions, either through continued soothing and therapeutic touch, or, just giving you a moment by yourself.
Massage therapy during pregnancy is a wonderful complementary choice for prenatal care. It's a healthy way to reduce stress and promote overall wellness. Massage relieves the discomforts experienced during pregnancy, such as backaches, stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches and edema (or swelling). Massage also reduces stress on weight-bearing joints, encourages blood and lymph circulation, helps to relax nervous tension and can help relieve depression or anxiety caused by hormonal changes.
